The Covid Cohort Bounce Back at St Leonard’s
At St Leonard’s Catholic School, Durham, Sixth Formers collecting their results have had a real spring in their step. Faced with their first public exams at 18 rather than 16, a daunting prospect, they have shown amazing resilience and determination to make their dreams and aspirations a reality, with an outstanding third of all grades awarded being A-A as well as 78% of grades achieved being in the top A to C band. Sebastian is walking on sunshine, with 4 A* grades in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry; he is off to Oxford University to study Mechanical Engineering. Sebastian credits his success to support from his teachers and the individual guidance he was given. Jessica also heaps praise on her specialist subject teachers, scoring AAA, she is off to Leeds University to study English Literature. Future doctor Michelle achieved AAA to secure a place studying Medicine and Surgery at Lancaster University. Meanwhile bright spark Harry is finding a practical application for his AAA*A grades: to pursue his dream job via the study of Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University.
Shaping the Future
Several pupils scored highly in Economics, ready to shape our future as tomorrow’s policy-makers: Callum achieved 4As too, and is heading off to Oxford University to read Economics and Management, and Alexander meanwhile is steaming ahead with 4 outstanding A grades in Maths, Further Maths, Biology and Chemistry, fulfilling his ambition to read Economics at Cambridge University.
Workplace Ready
With more and more students opting for a practical alternative in place of university, St Leonard’s pupils’ achievement in vocational subjects shows how well they have been prepared to join the world of work: a fantastic 82% of all grades awarded were at Distinction and above, and 96% at Merit and above; these young adults are workplace-ready and raring to go.
Keeping it Local
Edwin worked his socks off to get AAAA so the world is his oyster, and Rachel with AAAA is lighting the way for the North East: off to study Geography at Durham University. Likewise, Christopher with three A Grades is staying close to home, heading off to Newcastle to study Mechanical Engineering. Vivien’s AAA grades mean she can happily move on to Durham University too, on the creative side this time, pursuing her dreams in visual arts and film.
As the cohort most marked by Covid, it’s fair to say these youngsters have bounced back with huge success across the board.
